FOLKESTONE Rugby Club’s rising ladies star Catherine Spencer got a surprise call into the England first team at the weekend and ended up scoring one of the tries in the victory over Wales.

She thought would watch the women’s national side before the men’s game, then train with the A side on Sunday but to her surprise she received a call from the England coach on Friday telling her she was on the bench on Saturday playing against Wales at The Stoop the home of Harlequins rugby club.

The England side were too strong for the Welsh and with the wind behind them opened up a large lead by half-time. With about 25 minutes left to go, the coach sent Catherine on to earn her first International cap and she got straight into the game with some strong runs.

Minutes from the end she marked her debut with a try when England had a ruck five metres short of the Welsh line and the ball came out and Spencer picked the ball up to drive over the line to score for her country.

Her excellent performance has earned her a starting berth at No8 against France this Saturday.

At the dinner after the match Catherine was presented with her cap by the England coach.

Folkestone coach Keith Woodward was delighted for his protegee. “This young lady has a great future ahead of her," he said.
