Folkestone striker Johan ter Horst may need to take an extended break to get over his knee injury.
Recent scan results showed the 23-year-old didn't need surgery and was clear to keep playing.
He scored in Invicta's win at Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday but only played four minutes against Enfield at the weekend.
Manager Neil Cugley said: "We're just not getting anywhere with Johan.
"I feel sorry for him because he's had two or three years of being injured.
"He's not there yet and I don't know what to do with him, whether to completely rest him, and it's such a shame for the lad.
"He's a quality player and we were delighted when he came back but over the last three years he's probably missed half the games through injury at every club he's been at. That must be so frustrating for him."
Ter Horst moved from Folkestone to Hull City in 2014 but returned to his hometown club last season after a spell at Maidstone.
Cugley said: "He had the scan and they said it doesn't need an operation but he's got a lot of build-up work to do around the knee.
"It's awkward because sometimes he looks all right in training and other times you can see he's limping and not right.
"It's a shame because he's a quality player and we want him playing.
"I only put him on the bench on Saturday in case we were losing so that hopefully he could pop up with a goal. He's got the quality to do that.
"He's only sub because he's not fit. He's one you want to be putting down first on the team sheet. He's a class player and a class person so that's frustrating.
"I'm not an expert (on what to do next). Do you say 'go away for a month' or do you chuck him in and see if he's all right? I don't really know so it's difficult.
"Some days in training he looks excellent and other days you can see he's not right. He's had a frustrating few years."
