Canvey Island 2, Folkestone Invicta 1

FOLKESTONE Invicta's FA Cup dreams were extinguished when they were beaten at Canvey Island on Saturday.

The young Invicta side desperately needed a positive break, but found themselves out of luck in Essex as they returned with a sense of injustice.

Invicta thought that they had opened the scoring after 37 minutes when Canvey goalkeeper Danny Potter scrambled the ball back after Mickey Bennett had deflected Scott Daniels' drive towards his own net.

Supporters behind the goal insisted that the ball had clearly crossed the line and the reaction of the players suggested the same, but the officials waved play on.

To rub salt into Invicta's wounds, Canvey themselves went ahead later, when captain Neil Gregory's shot was deflected into the net after Lee Boylan had dummied Ben Chenery's cross from the right. Scott Forbes made it 2-0 to Canvey after 74 minutes when he shot home at the far post after Boylan had shrugged off Scott Lindsay and sent in a low cross in a move started by John Kennedy.

Substitute John Ayling pulled a goal back For Invicta after 78 minutes. Invicta could not conjure up a second goal and they had keeper Dave Wietecha to thank for three sensational saves from Boylan.

There were bookings for Canvey goalscorer Gregory and substitute David Gregory and for Invicta's Hafner.
