The prospect of promotion to National League South doesn’t frighten Folkestone chairman Paul Morgan.
Invicta are the surprise package in Bostik Premier this season and they climbed to third with a 5-1 win at home to Enfield on Tuesday night.
Neil Cugley’s side, in only their second season back at this level, are definite play-off contenders and Mr Morgan is thrilled by their progress.
He said: “We’re living the dream at the moment.
“I had a three-year plan when I took over as chairman (in 2016). In my first year we’d just got promoted and our first aim was to stay in the league. The next year was to push on and the third year was to go for it.
“The way we’re playing at the moment and the position we’re in, in my eyes, we’re a year ahead of schedule.
“With Billericay in the position they are and the finances they’ve got, I don’t think we’ll go up automatically but we’ve got a good chance in the play-offs if we keep going the way we are.
“If we need to add to the squad, there is money available to do that as long as we don’t go mad. If we could get promotion this year, it would be fantastic and a dream for me.”
Vice-chairman Jim Pellatt looks after the day-to-day running of the club but Mr Morgan is in regular contact with Cugley about the playing squad and potential additions.
He said: “We’ve got to be realistic. If we did get promoted, finances would be tight but we’re not overdrawn. We’ve got no debts, we’ve got a bit of money in the bank and I feel gates would improve.
“Everybody on the board of directors has Folkestone Invicta at heart. You can throw a lot of money at a football club and it doesn’t work but my first aim was to plough some of my own money into doing Stripes up and renaming it Bar Invicta.
“We can now rent that out for functions which brings in more revenue and that helps the playing side of it.
“We’ve got every Saturday and most Sundays fully booked from now until June and July, which is fantastic and a lot of revenue for the club. I could have ploughed that money straight into the playing budget and it would have got swallowed up.
“Our aim is to improve the facilities down here and once we’ve done that, we’re getting extra revenue from functions and more fans coming through, wanting to spend a bit more time and money.
“No-one fears promotion. If we do go up, we can hold our own.
“Bognor are doing all right up there in the next league and Havant & Waterlooville seem to be holding their own so I don’t see why we can’t.”
Folkestone have now won eight league games in a row and they have welcomed striker Johan ter Horst back to the club on loan from Maidstone United.
Ter Horst, who left to sign for Hull City in 2014, scored twice on his second Invicta debut with Ade Yusuff (2) and Sam Hasler also on the scoresheet.
Fellow striker Ian Draycott is now on honeymoon for three weeks so Ter Horst and Yusuff will lead the line at Wingate & Finchley on Saturday.
