A MULTI-million pound redevelopment of Gravesend between the riverside and the town centre is being spearheaded by the borough council. It would feature a major department store, two new squares, and an open air entertainment area in the town centre.
Entertainment and shopping would be on Market Square and Horn Yard car parks under a 'big top' that could be modified for each event. The area behind St George's Centre would be completely altered with the store providing the focus in the daytime and cafes and restaurants turning it into a thriving centre in the evening.
The revolutionary council plans are being drawn up by the North Kent Architecture Centre. Work could start within four years.
If they go ahead they will radically alter the north of the town between the river and the pedestrianised shopping areas.
The developments are expected to cost around £80 million. More than half would be needed for the new department store.
