Video has emerged of the moment a teenager was arrested after two people were injured in an attack at a Gurdwara.
A huge police presence descended on Gravesend at about 8pm yesterday (Thursday) after a suspect armed with a blade entered the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara.
Two people were injured during the incident, although police say their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The air ambulance touched down on playing fields near the gurdwara on Saddington Street.
A cordon was set up in both nearby Trinity Road and Khalsa Avenue.
Officers have confirmed they are not looking for any other suspects.
A spokesman said: “Kent Police was called at 8.10pm on Thursday, July 11 to a report of a disturbance at a Gurdwara on Saddington Street in Gravesend.
“It was reported that two people had sustained injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening and are being treated locally.
“A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
“Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident but remain on scene while enquiries are ongoing.”
Reports have referred to someone in the area with a knife, although this has yet to be confirmed by police.
Gravesend gurdwara spokesman Jagdev Singh Virdee confirmed there was an incident at the venue.
He said: “A person has been arrested by Kent Police on suspicion of attempted murder, after entering the gurdwara and creating an incident in one of the Darbar Halls.
“The Gurdwara is cooperating fully with Kent Police who are treating the incident very seriously, with the District Commander on site to support whilst the investigation is ongoing.
“The person was spotted by the gurdwara security team and police were called immediately.”
He said the incident happened after Sukhasan, a Sikh closing ritual, had taken place, and the holy book Guru Granth Sahib Ji was not present in the hall.
In pictures taken from the scene by our reporter, at least seven police vehicles could be seen lining the street.
KentOnline reporter Keely Greenwood said last night: “A long stretch of road next to the gurdwara and sports centre has been cordoned off with police cars inside and outside the cordon.
“A police officer was standing by the police tape.
“Two officers ducked under the tape and got in their car to drive to the other temple entrance.
“Concerned members of the public were seen rushing up to the cordon and standing around anxiously.
“There was a definite air of frenzy and that something serious was happening.
“There were police lights as far down the long street as I could see.”
One resident said: “The police helicopter was circling over the town centre at around 8pm, shortly afterwards the air ambulance landed in the grounds of the Gurdwara.
“There were two ambulances and five police vehicles parked in Trinity Road which was taped off by Holy Trinity primary school.
“A neighbour said that she'd heard that two people had been stabbed inside the gurdwara with a large knife.”
