Oxley's Kitchen American diner in Gravesend offers more than 100 sauces

Diners will be struggling to decide which condiment to have with their meal now an English-American fusion diner, boasting more than 100 sauces and salts, has opened.

Maple syrup, Guinness Barbecue and Caribbean Jerk BBQ Salt are just some of the dressings customers at Oxley’s Kitchen, which opened yesterday in Windmill Street, Gravesend, will be able to have with their hot dogs, chicken wings or toad in the hole.

Owner of the diner, Darren Oxley, who has been running Nanny Janet’s cafe in Milton Road and the Promenade Cafe in Commercial Place over the past 35 years, has always been itching to bring a taste of America to Gravesend.

He said: “It is a fusion of American and English so we can cater for the grandmother and the granddaughter, so if the grandmother has toad in the hole, the grandchild can have a hot dog and crinkled chips.

“My family have been going to America since 1980. My first trip to America was when I was 10. There’s nothing I don’t love about it. Everything changes.

“Las Vegas is my favourite place.”

Speaking of Oxley’s menu, he said: “It is fresh food. We are not going to have any freezers in place, apart for the ice cream.

“We bought this building last year. It’s taken a while to renovate as we had to completely redo it. Builders tried to re-lay the floor and they couldn’t get it level.”

Darren said the change in the road layout had helped businesses in Windmill Street.

He said: “People have been taken down Windmill Street and the change in the road system is massive.

“Sundays is very busy down here now because of the free car parking. Even the butcher is open on a Sunday now.”

Oxley’s Kitchen will open from 7.30am to 5pm, extending its closing time in 2018 to 11.30pm.
