Work is ongoing to transform a historic venue into a ”foodie’s paradise” with street vendors, entertainment and games to boot.
The new operator of Gravesend Borough Market, Beer and Feast, has slowly been revealing the details of new businesses coming to the space as it sets its sights on a summer opening.
When the firm, owned by Jamie Clark and Thomas Mudge, took over the venue earlier this year there were 17 empty units.
Now only four remain.
Jamie told KentOnline: “We are nearly full and we have added units to it. We had a good response once it was announced.
“We are trying to make sure it does not clash with what is already here and trying to pick the right things for the market.
“Anything that is interesting, unique and not already here is what we have been looking for.
“We have gone to markets up and down the country and looking what is working there to bring to Gravesend.”
So far, it has been revealed The Cocktail Bar, which will serve a range of drinks, and The Deli and Bottle Shop, which will include cured meats, a cheese counter, and a selection of wines, will help fill the void.
Today (May 30) the pair have announced the latest and one of the biggest additions to the market - augmented reality darts.
It will fill two units, each hosting up to six people, and will include interactive and different game models meaning it is more than just a regular dartboard.
Jamie added: “Our aim is to get people to come here and stay here. It is about spending the day or evening here, for it to become a one-stop shop.
“We have tried to find things that are not already available in the area such as the darts and shuffleboard.”
They are also creating four kiosks which will be used to host stalls in place of the current Saturday market and be available any day of the week.
Jamie added: “There has been lots of speculation. We are going to increase the seating and be more creative with the pop-ups.
“There will still be that element but it will be different to how it was. We want something to be there every day and not just on a Saturday.”
Gravesham council decided in October to bring in an external management company that has expertise and experience running similar venues to transform the space.
Earlier this year, it was announced Beer and Feast had been picked as the owners had more than 15 years of experience in business and marketing and the hospitality industry.
The pair have a reputation for running popular places to eat out in the county, such as The Dead Pigeon pub in Rochester and The Greedy Banker in Rainham.
Work is currently underway to create the kiosks and add big screens which could be used to show sports or films.
The market, next to the High Street in Gravesend, has been rebranded as Hatch, and is expected to be open in early summer.
