Armed police descended on a town centre street after reports of several gunshots being fired.

Kent Police were called to Darnley Street, Gravesend, at just before 3.45am today in response to a "firearms incident".

No injuries have been reported and the road was closed for several hours while investigations were carried out.

Armed police were called and officers searched for the offenders.

Police have now left the scene, but a spokesman would not confirm whether any suspects had been found or arrested.

A spokesman said: "This is being treated as an isolated issue and there is not believed to be any threat to public safety."

Residents in the road, who did not want to be named, said they were shocked and confused to hear multiple gunshots had been fired.

A 72-year-old man said: "I heard a big loud bang when I went to the toilet but I didn't think anything of it. We do generally get police walking down here."

A 44-year-old man added: "I work as a taxi driver and I got in at 2am and I didn't see much going on.

"But when I went round the corner there was a couple of cars with about six big men in them waiting at the end of the road.

"I looked at them and it was very strange because usually it is dead at that time."

A 21-year-old man, who lives near the junction with Brandon Street, said: "I'm really shocked to hear what has happened. It is a quiet area, there is never that sort of thing here."
