ELDERLY householders in the Gravesham and Dartford area are being warned by police to be extra vigilant when answering the door to anybody claiming to be from the utility companies.

The advice follows two burglaries in the Dene Holm Road area of Gravesend between 11am and noon on Wednesday, January 31.

A white man aged about 30 with a northern accent knocked on the doors of two women in their 80s and claimed to be from the water company. He asked to look at the pipes under the sink.

It is believed that while the offender was distracting the victims, a second person entered and searched both properties and stole £4,000 cash from one and £9,000 in cash from the second.

The man said to have a northern accent, is about 5ft 10in tall, of stocky build, with short dark hair.

Sgt Rod Chapman, of North Kent Police, said: "Once again, some elderly people have been victims of heartless thieves. It is essential that people demand identification from people who come to their door claiming to be from utility companies or touting for work.

"If necessary, phone the company, using the telephone number from the directory, to confirm their identity. Never let them in, close the door or keep the security chain on, until you are satisfied they are genuine. If you are worried, call the police. '

"We cannot stress how important it is that that friends, neighbours and relatives ensure that any elderly friends or relatives follow this advice."

Anyone who saw anyboby acting suspiciously in Dene Holme Road on January 31 is asked to contact North Kent Police at Gravesend 01474 565135 or alternatively you can contact Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. All calls to Crimestoppers are free, and treated in the strictest confidence. You don’t have to leave your name and you could be eligible for a cash reward.
