Bollywood has come to Gravesend today with filming taking place at the Gurdwara.
An upcoming Indian romantic comedy, named Mubarakan, began its shoot at the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara yesterday and will continue into next week.
The film stars a number of famous actors including Anil Kapoor, who has starred across Bollywood as well as in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire.
Cllr Gurjit Kaur Bains, Gravesham cabinet member for community, was at the shoot.
She said: “We feel this will be a positive for not only the Sikh community in Gravesend but the town as a whole.
“The gurdwara is such an iconic place of worship and it gives us pride that people want to come and visit.”
The film is based on a Sikh family and also features Anil Kapoor’s nephew, Arjun Kapoor.
The pair will appear together for the first time on screen to reprise their real-life relationship.
The Gurdwara has been chosen as the location for a wedding scene with filming taking place both inside and outside of the building.
The whole film is being shot in the UK, with the Gravesend location being their centre for six days.
Cllr Bains added that she hoped the high profile of the film will introduce more worshipers and tourists to the distinguished building.
The Gurdwara opened in 2010 after an eight year construction and is thought to be one of the largest in the UK.
