Firefighting operations have now ended at the scene of a haystack blaze which had been going on for three days.

Crews have spent the weekend dealing with the massive blaze in Church Road, Cobham, near Gravesend.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said this morning (September 1): “People are still being asked to avoid the area as crews continue to make good progress at the site.”

Crews had first been called to the site just before 1pm on Thursday (August 29).

Fire five engines, a bulk water carrier and a technical rescue unit were needed at the height of the blaze. By Friday evening operations had been scaled back with only two fire engines still on site.

Tonight Kent Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighting operations have now ended at the scene of some hay bales on fire at Church Road in Cobham, Gravesend.

“The cause is not yet known, and there are no reported injuries.

“People are no longer advised to avoid the area.”

It is not the first time firefighters have been called to a blaze involving haystacks in this area. Last year, 6,000 tons of hay bales burnt for five days. Fire crews were called to the field at around 7.45pm on May 28 and operations did not end until May 31.
