Plans to develop a an energy centre in Tilbury have been stopped, due to costs.

The project, that was set to change Gravesend's skyline, has been halted because of current market conditions and project costs.

The energy centre was planned to replace the Tilbury power station that is still being demolished in stages.

RWE Generation S.E. spokesman Kelly Nye said: "The decision to freeze Tilbury Energy Centre has not been taken lightly, it will be a disappointment for those who have been working so hard to get us to the stage we have reached.

"We would like to sincerely thank the local authorities and community for their support during the past year.

"As always, RWE will constantly explore options for how best to develop our site in Tilbury, which remains a good location for future energy options."

More than 10 planned demolitions have taken place at the power station where the energy centre was planned to be, and more will continue into 2019.
