A water pipe exploded underneath a busy town centre road, causing traffic gridlock and potential road closures.

Water could be seen gushing several feet into the air in Gravesend town centre after work carried out nearby caused the pipe to break.

Neil Sheridan, a contractor working on behalf of Southern Water, said that Stone Street will probably have to close soon while the incident is fixed
