POTENTIALLY deadly industrial-strengh fireworks are being set off in the Gravesend area - prompting calls for a total ban on private sales.

Police say it is only "sheer luck" that has prevented someone being maimed or even killed by the new "super" fireworks.

Two vehicles and a phone box have already been damaged in the Palmer Avenue area of the Kings Farm estate. And there have been a number of other worrying incidents.

In all cases the fireworks used appear to be those intended for trade-use and therefore require a huge distance between the firework and spectators to insure a safe explosion.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "We are taking co-ordinated and concerted actions to bring an end to this spate of incidents. Our chief concern is for the safety of the public and those people who have set off these fireworks, whose behaviour is putting them at great risk."

Councillor Jean Christie, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said the misuse of fireworks highlighted the need for a public debate questioning whether fireworks should be banned.

She said: "I absolutely condemn the use of these fireworks in this manner. It is putting people's lives in danger. We need to question where people are getting the fireworks from. I hope the police can track down the source and stop people misusing them."
