Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is in Gravesend today to film the Liberal Democrat party's political broadcasts.

The Lib Dem leader was spotted strutting around the town centre doing selfies, high fiveing the air, and batting ping pong balls as part of his "fun" promotional video due out next month.

Mr Clegg was so keen to visit the town that he walked out mid-way through his party's alternative budget speech in the House of Commons to be there.

Despite it being on film, Mr Clegg denied that he walked out before Danny Alexander finished his speech earlier today.

Speaking exclusively to KentOnline, he said: "It's a bit of fun. I want to have fun in this general election campaign. I don't want it to be too po-faced and serious."

Asked why the party decided to shoot the video in Gravesend, he said: "It was just a really great place to do this and hopefully not cause too much disruption.

"Everybody in the shops here have been really warm and really generous with their time."

Speculation about Mr Clegg's visit went into overdrive after film crews were spotted in Windmill Street and various other locations.

Details about his arrival have been kept under wraps by security officials but he has been seen in Manor Road this afternoon.

The Lib Dems have chosen Gravesham to film four political broadcasts in the run-up to the general election on Thursday, May 7.

The party hopes the videos will convince the electorate to back the junior coalition partners ahead of the vote.
