The Kent Lawn Tennis Awards turned into ladies' night for Gravesham Tennis Club with honours for two of the club's stalwarts.

Janet O'Sullivan, from Meopham, was given the Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of more than 35 years on the committee of Gravesham Tennis Club - which is based at Gravesend Rugby Club in Milton Road - in a number of roles as well as being a former top player there.

She said: "I have played tennis for over 70 years so anything I have done to help the sport is because I have played and enjoyed tennis for all my adult life.

"I started at Bexleyheath Tennis Club, then played at Meopham where I was also on the committee for some time.

"I came to Gravesham because I wanted to play on grass but the grass only lasted for a few years!"

Angie Suleau, from Higham, is the junior development manager at Gravesham Tennis Club and was named as Kent LTA's Official of the Year.

Despite being seriously ill in December 2019, Angie quickly returned to running and organising competitions.

She also took part in virtual coffee mornings with other Kent clubs over the past year to share best practice in response to frequently changing Covid-19 guidelines.

Club chairman Damian Pender said: "We are thoroughly delighted that the Kent LTA has recognised the contribution made to tennis by both Janet and Angie. We are grateful for the work they do at the very heart of our club - these awards are so richly deserved."

Gravesham Tennis Club, which has eight all-weather hard courts, was also a finalist in three other categories including Club of the Year at the awards which were held virtually. County winners will be put forward for consideration by the LTA at regional award level.
