A driver has died after a serious crash which closed a busy route in both directions.
Emergency services, including police, the fire service, and paramedics, were called to part of the A2 and M2 at around 2.35am.
A black VW Tiguan was travelling on the coastbound carriageway near the slip road for the A289 towards Wainscott when it collided with the central barrier and a bridge parapet.
A 29-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
Motorists faced long queues and delays while the A2 coast-bound was shut between Gravesend and Junction 1 of the M2 for Strood.
A specialist structural engineer was called to the scene to assess damage to the lampposts, as well as the central reservation barrier and bridge supports which were also struck in the collision.
National Highways turned drivers who were caught within the closure on the coast-bound carriageway around and released via the rear of the queue, whereas traffic caught within the London-bound closure was released slowly past the scene.
Long diversions were put in place, through Higham and other nearby roads, while officers remained at the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to the police, is urged to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538, quoting reference SM/DGC/099/24. You can also email sciu.td@kent.police.uk.
