A magical FA Cup tale could be rewritten on Saturday when the Fleet look to become giant-killers back at the ground where they made headlines 50 years ago.

Carlisle United stand between Ebbsfleet and a place in the second round, 50 years after Tony Sitford scored for Gravesend & Northfleet at Brunton Park to dump the Cumbrians out of the competition.

Then, as now, Carlisle played in the third tier of English football. The Fleet, a Southern League side in 1962/63, are now languishing toward the foot of Blue Square Bet Premier.

Manager Liam Daish has called for another FA Cup hero to emerge from his squad on Saturday to emulate Sitford’s historic strike at Carlisle.

He said: "We’ll have a go at it and enjoy ourselves. We need to defend well and need someone to come out of the pack and be a real hero in front of goal.

"This is a great competition and the further you go, it gets even better. We’ll go there with real confidence."
