A religious holiday which is celebrated by Muslims around the world will be marked with an outdoor festival later this month.

After a two-year absence, the Eid Community Mela is back with special guests and a whole lot of food at a celebration in Gravesend.

Eid al-Adha remembers the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham J and is a moment to help the poor and needy, as well as celebrating later in the day.

The Gravesend and Dartford Muslim Association, community arts organisation Cohesion Plus and Shah Jalal Mosque are joining forces to host an event which aims to give Muslims a chance to celebrate Eid outside their homes.

It is also an opportunity to promote community cohesion and engagement.

There will be a funfair, henna painting, music from DJ Lethal Soundz and much more along with stalls offering a wide range of food for people to feast on.

Partnering agencies will be giving out information to spread awareness on services they can offer.

Guests include the Mayor of Gravesham Cllr Peter Scollard, Gravesham MP Adam Holloway, faith groups, Gravesend mosque chairman Bilal Farooq and Gravesend Shahjalal mosque chairman Jahir Ali.

Mr Farooq said: “This event is an opportunity to show our culture and values to wider Gravesham communities.

“There is still a lot more that needs to be done to raise awareness of Islam and its peaceful nature.”

Mr Farooq also said that he hopes to bring people and faith groups together and build trust, co-operation and mutual understanding.

The festivities will be taking place on June 12 from 2pm till 6pm at Fort Gardens in Gravesend.
