Firefighters were called to Greenhithe Railway Station this evening after a fire broke out.

Crews and members of the British Transport Police were alerted after an electrical fault caused a small blaze.

Passengers had to be evacuated, but no one was injured.

Emergency services were called out to the station, near Dartford, shortly after 5pm after the fire broke out in an electrical compartment.

There had been reports of an electrical burning smell onboard the train which had stopped at the station.

Working with National Rail and train company staff, firefighters were able to find the small fire and put it out.

The incident will no doubt cause further delays for commuters trying to get home, with weather conditions already resulting in reduced services.

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 6pm.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "A small fire occurred underneath the 4.48pm service from Gravesend to London Cannon Street.

"As soon as the driver became aware of this, he made an announcement to passengers, and passengers were evacuated immediately.

"Emergency services were called and the fire was put out. Network Rail engineers worked to move the train as quickly as possible and the cause is being investigated.

"Any passengers who have been delayed by 30 minutes or more are entitled to claim compensation via our Delay Repay compensation scheme."
