Surveyors working on a new Thames crossing have hit a gas pipe near homes.

Highways England confirmed that Lower Thames Crossing workers had hit the pipe in a field off Thong Lane, Gravesend.

Investigative work was being carried out for the Lower Thames Crossing, which would join Kent with Essex through Thurrock.

A Highways England spokesman said: "During ground investigation work last week our site team scratched coating off a gas pipeline.

"While no serious damage was done we take these matters seriously, and have thoroughly reviewed our team's procedures to ensure that all relevant measures are in place to ensure that this does not happen again."

Nearby residents have been informed that their gas pressure has been reduced while repairs are undertaken.

This issue comes after homeowners filed complaints against LTC workers, who were parking vehicles in a way that blocked their driveways.
