Video: Rats spotted scavenging for food in Gravesend town centre

Published: 13:00, 04 April 2014

For some people, the sight of a rat is their worst nightmare - and a group of the furry frights has been caught on video in Gravesend.

The clip shows at least six of the scavengers scurrying around on a small green area on Darnley Road, near railway tracks.

Gravesham council said it is working with Network Rail to tackle the problem - and urged people not to feed birds in the area.

The rodents were drawn out into the open by food left for pigeons on the pavement.

The video, which shows brown and black rats, was posted on Facebook by Trevor Webster.

A Gravesham council spokesman said: "The council and Network Rail are currently taking action to deal with this problem, including baiting, filling the holes and keeping the area clean.

"We urge people not to feed the birds in this area and refrain from littering."

In posting the video on Facebook, Mr Webster said: "Filmed at about 3.15pm in the little green area on the corner above the station car park, opposite the Somerset arms."
