A hamster was at the centre of a dramatic rescue attempt when a fire broke out in a Gravesend home.

The pint-sized pet, named Humphrey, was trapped in a smoke-filled bedroom when flames took hold at a detached property in Leith Park Road last Wednesday.

He needed oxygen and water once firefighters had rescued him from the flames, but has made a full recovery.

Homeowner Jean Leggatt said: "We got the dog and our cats out, but it was too risky to go upstairs to get Humphrey."
