A 56-year-old man was arrested after an NHS worker was allegedly assaulted in a residential street.

KentOnline has been told the health professional – who is in his 50s – was struck with a hammer in King’s Drive, Gravesend, at around 5.25pm on Monday.

Although the incident has been confirmed, whether a hammer was used has not.

Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust said: “A member of our staff was injured and required treatment at a local hospital before being discharged.

“Kent Police has launched an investigation and we are continuing to assist them with their ongoing inquiries.”

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said around five police cars and an ambulance were at the scene.

They added that the NHS worker had been struck with a claw hammer before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham.

Police would not be drawn on the exact circumstances, with a spokesman saying: "A 56-year-old man, who is known to the victim, was arrested on suspicion of assault.

"He has since been released, pending further inquiries."
