Inquest opens into death of Northfleet Technology College pupil Szymon who died after being hit by a minibus in Vale Road, Northfleet

An inquest has opened today into the death of an 11-year-old schoolboy who was hit by a minibus.

Northfleet Technology College pupil Szymon Jan Lecznar passed away in hospital after suffering multiple injuries.

The incident happened in Vale Road, Northfleet, close to the junction with Colyer Road and Park Avenue at around 8.25am on February 2 as the youngster walked to school.

At an inquest opened this morning at County Hall, Maidstone, coroner Roger Hatch heard Szymon lived at Holmes Court, Fenners Marsh, Gravesend.

The brief hearing heard he died at Darent Valley Hospital after the incident and the cause of death was given as a head injury.

No more details were given.

Since the tragedy, a growing number of flowers, cards and basketballs have been laid on the pavement near the scene in Szymon's memory and the college released a statement paying tribute to their "talented and enthusiastic" Year 7 student.

Many of the witnesses were fellow pupils who have been offered support by the school.

A teenager – who was also a pedestrian – from the Gravesend area was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and released on bail until tomorrow – Thursday, February 17 –pending further inquiries.
