Police have found more than 70 canisters of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, after searching a car.

Officers also located weapons and Class A drugs when attending a report of anti-social behaviour in New Ash Green.

The operation took place at about 4.30pm yesterday and saw two cars and a number of people searched.

Police seized a large amount of cash, suspected Class A and B drugs, a knuckleduster and a baseball bat.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and possession with intent to supply drugs. He has since been released on police bail whilst inquiries continue.

It comes as nitrous oxide is set to be banned as part of a government crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

The party drug is second to cannabis as the most commonly misused substance among 16 to 24-year-olds in England.

People will often transfer the gas into a balloon, but may inhale it directly from the canister.

When inhaled, it gives the user a short, sharp high, slowing down the brain and body's responses.

It can create feelings of euphoria and result in giggling fits - hence the nickname laughing gas - but can also cause severe headaches, dizziness and paranoia.
