Kent's only contestant in this year's Great British Bake off has made it to the final.

Gravesend-born Laura Adlington scraped through in patisserie week despite a difficult technical challenge.

She beat Hermine who just missed out after her show stopper failed to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Pru Leith.

Laura's final bake – a Black Forest Gateau cube cake – melted in the heat and looked a bit messy but the judges were very impressed with the flavour, a common comment on her baking through out the show.

She will take on David and Peter in next week's final.

Laura was previously named star baker in pastry week thanks to her botanical themed Garden of Kent caged tart show-stopper. In the signature round that week, the bakers were challenged with making a Cornish classic, the humble pasty.

Laura, who lives in Halling, chose to fill hers with leek, potato and pancetta which garnered high praise from the judges with Prue dubbing the goods as "heaven."

Paul said: "I think you've got the perfect blend there of ingredients, the texture and flavour is spot on – well done."

This week, the signature challenge saw Laura make poached pineapple, kiwi and passion fruit rum babas, which drew praise, but she again had problems in the technical challenge – a Danish celebration cake which she underbaked.

But she clung on for that place in the final.

She said: "I can't process it all right now. It's mad. I am in the final of the Great British Bake Off – the actual final."

The show airs next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
