Motorists faced long delays this morning after an accident involving a motorcyclist.

Highways bosses reported slow moving traffic on the A2 Londonbound because of an accident between the A227 for Gravesend and the B262 for Southfleet just after 6.30am.

But the queues affected several other major roads Kent, as children across the county return to school.

Police were called to the scene. Stock image.

The motorcyclist, a man in his thirties, was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

One lane was closed until around 8am when all lanes were re-opened.

However, the delays continued and congestion were stretching back to Junction 2 of the M2 at Cuxton.

A KCC spokesman said: “All lanes have now opened on the A2 between A227 and B262 after the vehicles involved were moved to the hard shoulder.

"Delays remain from M2 J2. Traffic diverting away from the incident via the A249 (M2 J5), A229 (M2 J3) and A228 (M2 J2) have added to the usual delays on these routes.

"As a result there is slow moving traffic on the M20 between J8 (A20) and J4 (A228).”

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 6.45am to a report of a collision involving a motorcyclist near Watling Street, Gravesend.

"Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and the motorcyclist, a man in his thirties was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries not believed to be life threatening. The vehicle was recovered and officers were away at 8.23am."

There were also delays at the M25 clockwise exit slip at Junction J2 with the A2.
