A school in Gravesend is urging all pupils to be vigilant after a girl was allegedly approached by a man who tried to get her into his car.

The incident happened to a sixth form student from Northfleet School for Girls as she walked in New House Lane, at around midday on Tuesday, March 30.

Police say the girl refused to speak with the driver and vehicle drove away.

She then called a relative to collect her and spoke with officers who arrived immediately.

In an email home to parents, head teacher Chris Norwood said the school in Hall Road had stepped up safety measures as a precaution.

He added: "A male in a black Vauxhall pulled up beside a sixth former and tried to get her into the car.

"The student was able to rush away, and the police are now involved.

"We will be ensuring a stronger presence outside the school at the end of the day; however we are asking all students to be vigilant and report any concerning behaviour to the police and ourselves as soon as possible.

"I'm sure this is an isolated incident, however we wanted to make all parents aware so that we can work together for the safety of all students."

It comes after separate reports of a man carrying out an indecent act in front of children in a road near the same school yesterday.
