Firefighters had to cut open a car and pull a man out after it had become wedged against a tree following a crash.

Emergency services, including the police and paramedics, were called to Halfpence Lane, Cobham, near Gravesend, at around 5.10pm last night to reports of a single car crash.

Two fire engines also arrived with machinery to cut the casualty out of the vehicle he was trapped in.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews were faced with a complex scene involving a car on its side, wedged against a tree. They stabilised the car and used hydraulic cutting and spreading equipment to remove the boot of the car and create space to access a trapped casualty.

"They successfully freed the casualty who was left in the care of paramedics."

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a collision on Halfpence Lane, Cobham, at approximately 5.45pm yesterday.

"Ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service.

"Two patients were assessed and treated before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

"The air ambulance service joined us in our ambulance to help treat one of the patients en route to hospital."

The emergency services were there until about 6.40pm.
