Medway's newest gym is set to open this month in the grounds of a secondary school.

Thinking Fitness Rochester is being billed as "two for the price of one" with members able to use its sister gym in Chatham for just £20 a month.

The state-of-the-art £3 million sports centre at Rochester Grammar School opens on Saturday September 24 for adults and families after school and at weekends.

As well as a gym offering a range of high-tech equipment, the new purpose-built building in Maidstone Road boasts a sports hall and dance studio.

The Thinking Fitness group of sports centres is part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, which has eight schools across Medway including The Victory Academy in Chatham.

It is a non-profit organisation, which sees all profits recycled back into its Trust’s schools and its mission of "transforming life chances", and maintaining the facilities for students and members.

The first Thinking Fitness gym opened on site at Holcombe Grammar in Maidstone Road, Chatham, in 2019. Since then, the Trust has opened another gym in Plympton, Devon, with Thinking Fitness Rochester as its third.

Memberships will be joint, meaning that for £20 per month, members will be able to use the facilities and attend the classes at both sites.

Plans are in place to expand upon the existing class timetable at Chatham, which includes activities such as pilates, spin, aerobics, combat, zumba and boxercise.

Nick Forward, head of business development at the Trust, said: "We are very excited for the much-anticipated launch of Thinking Fitness Rochester this September.

"The launch of this gym is all the more rewarding knowing the income generated by our sports centres is recycled back into our schools to enhance the education of our young people.

"I’m so proud of the team and our schools for their hard work and cooperation, and can’t wait to welcome the local community to our fantastic new facility very soon."

Most of the project was funded by the Department for Education.

Meanwhile, the Waterside Leisure Centre at Gillingham Marina – which closed "permanently" during the pandemic – has announced it will re-open in November under new ownership.

The complex, which includes a gym, pool with views over the River Medway, squash and badminton courts, a spin and dance room, is currently undergoing a makeover.

It's due to re-open on November 1.
