Parts of Cascades Leisure Centre, in Thong Lane, Gravesend, to remain shut after Storm Gareth

Parts of a leisure centre that was battered by Storm Gareth and forced to evacuate will remain closed until next week.

Cascades Leisure Centre, in Thong Lane, Gravesend, was left with damage to its roof when it was hit by heavy winds on Sunday March 10.

It was evacuated at the weekend and didn't reopen partially until yesterday, when the dry side of the centre, which includes the gym and badminton courts.

The swimming pool and health suite will remain closed for the rest of the week while works take place to make the roof waterproof.

The council are hopeful that the swimming pool will reopen on Monday March 18.

Further investigation is required in the health suite to assess the water damage. It is hoped that it will reopen later this month.

Head of operations at Gravesham Community Leisure Ltd, Wayne Pedrick, said: "We are really sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused, our customers and staff safety is paramount to us and we are doing everything within our power to fix the damage so that we can reopen the centre fully. "I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience and the hard work of the staff at the centre, the council and Emergency Services.”

Swimming lessons and some classes have been transferred to Cygnet Leisure Centre, in Old Perry Street, temporarily.
