Pictures from the scene show a police car next to the red bus, which has completely come off the road and onto a grass bank.

A witness who passed the accident at around 5.10pm says the bus didn’t look like it had any passengers on board.

She said: “I only saw one man standing around – I didn't see anyone else.

“I just can't understand how it ended up there?”

A spokesman from Kent Police said: “We were called at 4.31pm to a report that a bus had collided with a tree.
