A CLERGYMAN who was married with two teenage children has died while playing rugby for his local club.

Fr Paul Wakelin, vicar of All Saints, Northfleet, was representing Gravesend Rugby Club in a home match against Old Anchorians. He was 46.

The cause of death has not yet been established. A post mortem was being held.

Fr Wakelin, who had served as vicar in the parish for 10 years, leaves a widow, Wendy, and children Luke and Joseph.

His funeral Mass will take place at All Saints on Thursday, November 30, at 11am.

Fr James Mowbray, curate of All Saints, said: “Fr Paul was a dear and trusted colleague and friend who has left a lasting legacy for this parish through his dedication and hard work.”

The Archdeacon of Rochester, the Ven Peter Lock, said Fr Wakelin was "a visionary parish priest and a very good sportsman".

Only weeks ago another member of Gravesend Rugby Club, Bernie Johnston, died from a heart attack while playing against Maidstone Barbarians. Fr Wakelin presided over the funeral of 65-year-old Mr Johnston, a father of two.
