A busy main route through one on the UK's longest villages has reopened days after scaffolding was brought down by Storm Eunice.

The A227 Wrotham Road in Meopham – the main route between the M20 and A2 – was shut in both directions between Longfield Road and Shipley Hills Road on Friday after destruction caused by Storm Eunice.

High winds saw the structure topple over and into the carriageway.

A scaffolding firm was at the Grade II listed cottage today as staff set about clearing the road.

Kent County Council confirmed the road had reopened just before 4pm after work was carried out throughout the day to make the area safe.

Drivers were being asked to use an alternative route but to expect delays as a result.

It is a busy route, connecting the A2 and the M20, and is also close to both Meopham Secondary and the primary school.

Gravesham Borough Council also warned to avoid using the surrounding lanes as there may be trees or other hazards which have not been reported.

It asked people to report any hazards to Kent County Council.

The owner of the property was understood to be there this morning but did not want to speak about what had happened.

An application to reconfigure vehicle access for the property and replace and resite a single-storey garage was granted permission in December.

People are being urged not to travel today as Storm Franklin hits the county and causes disruption to Kent's transport network.
