Police are reminding people to be aware of scam phone calls after an elderly woman was targeted.

She received a call from a man pretending to work for Scotland Yard on Wednesday, at around 11am.

The woman, from Gravesend, was told a man who said he was her grandson had been arrested, with cloned bank cards in his possession.

She was asked to check her own cards and passport were at home, and given the impression that someone would visit her to collect them.

The woman did not pass on her details, as she believed it was suspicious.

Chief Inspector Neil Loudon, district commander for Dartford and Gravesham, said: "This was a deliberate scam call to target a vulnerable resident by claiming her bank cards had been cloned.

"I’d like to remind people to never give bank details over the phone, genuine police will never call you up and ask for these details.

"I’d also encourage residents not to deal with cold callers who knock on doors offering work to clean driveways, repair roofs or to maintain garden shrubs, hedges and trees, and would urge neighbours and family members to keep an eye out for vulnerable people.

"If you see or hear anything suspicious do not hesitate to call us."
