Another part of Tilbury Power Station will be brought down this morning in a second controlled explosion.

Since the beginning of last year, RWE’s principal contractor Brown and Mason has been progressing with the demolition. Works are now completed on the site of the former older A Station.

The first controlled explosion took place last September, and could be clearly seen and heard across the river in Gravesend.

At 10am today, the second explosive demolition will take place, bringing down half the Turbine Hall.

The structure – which is 25 metres high, 126 metres long and 27 metres wide – housed the four 350MW units that powered the coal-fired station when it was operational.

Although the explosion and collapse may be heard off site, any noise will be over very quickly.

An exclusion zone will be set up, during and immediately after the explosion, but will be well within the power station boundary fence.

Demolition of this section of the Turbine Hall is considered to be low impact. Local authorities and the police have been consulted and it has been agreed that no emergency services will be required on site, with the exception of a minimal police presence.

The other main structures such as the chimneys, boiler house, turbine hall and bunker house are due for explosive demolition later this year. More details will be revealed nearer the time.

The demolition of the whole site is expected to be completed towards the end of 2018.
