Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a yob mugs an elderly lady of £80 cash.

The 90-year-old had withdrawn money outside the Nisa Local Newsbox Express in Gravesend when she was targetted.

She’d taken £100 out to pay her cleaner and get some groceries from the corner shop.

Store owner Chelan Patel said: “She’s a regular customer and was drawing money outside at the cashpoint before she came in.

“The man came behind her on a bike before propping it up against the shop front.

“He waited for her to withdraw the money and as she went to walk into the shop with it in her hand he snatched it and ran.

“Staff saw what happened and ran out to her and took the bike in that he left.”

The 32-year-old confirmed although the victim was left shocked and shaken she wasn’t physically hurt.

He added: “She was really shaken up and stayed with us in the shop for about three hours.

“We gave her some drinks and calmed her before the police came about 45 minutes after it happened.

“She’s been coming here for as long as I can remember; she comes in nearly every day.

“She’d withdrawn £100 but the man only managed to grab £80 of it.”

Following the ordeal, Chelan and his staff put an appeal out on social media to help the police track the man down.

He said: “Our customers were able to find his name and address within 24 hours, we gave the details to the police but we haven’t heard back from them yet.

“We had something similar happen last year and our customers and community also came together and managed to get us the offender’s details within 24 hours as well.

“People in the area know the shop, I’ve owned it for five years and my dad owned it before me so we’re a family-run business and we employ about 16 members of staff from the area.”

After sharing what had happened and putting an appeal out for information, Chelan also set up an in-store collection point and JustGiving page so some money could be raised for the woman.

He said: “In just a few days we’ve raised more than £800. Our in-store collection box has collected £300 and the JustGiving page has raised more than £550.

“The target was only £200. The lady popped in the store on Friday, I wasn’t there, but she said she was fine and came in to thank us. She is really grateful for the money raised.”

The incident happened on Tuesday, January 23, at around 11am. Police have been contacted for more information.
