Teenager Alfie Lambert wanted to something a cut above to thank hospice staff who nursed his gran.

But he didn't reckon it would involve the "ultimate sacrifice" to him – having his trendy barnet shaved.

His beloved nan, Wendy Lambert, 61, died after losing her battle with an aggressive form of stomach cancer.

Wendy, a former school kitchen supervisor and foster carer, was very close to all of her grandchildren.

The close-knit family are eternally grateful to nurses at the ellenor hospice, who visited her regularly at the family home in Mackenzie Way, Gravesend.

Wendy's son Ricky, 41, said: "Alfie talked about doing something to raise money for the hospice. He thought he would get a few hundred quid, but said if it got to £1,000 he would have his head shaved.

"He's a typical 14 year-old and goes to a trendy Turkish barbers – so that was the ultimate sacrifice for him."

Alfie's cousins Freddie, 12, and Frankie, nine, also underwent the chop with him and together they have raised £1,600 for hospice in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet.

Ricky, a firefighter, and Alfie's sister Lauren,11, and brother Jack, three, are immensely proud of their fundraising efforts.

Wendy had recently retired from her job at Thamesview School and had been looking forward to spending more time with husband Stephen, 60, at their caravan on the Isle of Sheppey.

She spent much of her spare time knitting and raised money for Macmillan Cancer.

She was only diagnosed with the disease months ago and passed away at home on Wednesday, May 20.
