Neighbours captured the shocking moment when armed police stormed a house where a young mum, who later died of her injuries, was reportedly being held hostage.

The two women, who wish to be known as F and K, feared they were at the centre of a terrorist attack after the firearms officers converged outside their home in Dartford on Saturday morning.

Tributes have since been paid to 36-year-old mum, Hayley Burke, who died from a gunshot wound, while a man, aged 29, was also taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

He is being treated as the suspect in a murder investigation.

F and K had been looking forward to watching the coronation when they heard what they thought was a gun shot over the sound of their TV at around midday.

F was in the kitchen making a cup of tea and K was in the living room looking on her phone.

They looked out the window and saw 12 uniformed armed police “running around” and “getting in position” near a property in Priory Road nearby.

F said: “We could hear shouting but couldn’t make out what they were saying.

“We thought somebody might need help.”

K stepped out to take a closer look and saw police pointing at a garage.

An officer immediately yelled at the startled flatmates to “get back inside“ as the drama unfurled in the residential street.

During the course of the afternoon they heard a police negotiator attempting to engage with somebody inside a property in Priory Road.

F, who has lived in the area for 15 years, said: “After many hours talking between the police and a man, I heard loud gun shots sound and what seemed like six gun-shot sounds.”.

Peering outside, she said: “The scene was horrific. I have never seen anything like it around here.

“I thought it must be terrorist-related.”

She then discovered a double-glazed widow had been shattered in a bedroom and a “bullet” was wedged inside the outer and inner pane.

She said: ”I stayed inside all day, as I was too frightened to go outside in the situation.

“It went on for hours. And then at about 4.30pm we saw a woman being given CPR outside a garage.

“We still had no idea what was going on.”

The following morning at about 10am, she ventured out into the street, where police were carrying out door-to-door inquiries, to report the smashed window.

She said: “At first the police did not take me seriously. But eventually they demanded access to my property and the bedroom was treated as a crime scene.

“My flat was turned into a police station with police guarding my bedroom. There were several policeman who changed shift at one stage.

“We were told we couldn’t go into it and stayed in the living room for the rest of the day.”

At about 5.30pm, she said it was confirmed to them by forensic officers that it was a fired bullet and they may need to break the window from the inside.

F said: “I was concerned about the damage and safety aspects.

“I must have asked about 20 time what was going and who was the officer in charge, I was told to call 101 and still zero, nil.

She said the incident has left her “anxious and depressed” and she was considering moving away from the area.

She said she no longer felt safe in her own home.

She said: ”I am an innocent civilian and I’m still waiting for explanation.”

Meanwhile, Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are continuing their murder investigation.

The suspect remains in a critical condition in hospital.
