Businesses have rallied round to repair Gravesend's iconic Clock Tower which was targeted by vandals.

The landmark in Milton Road is traditionally illuminated in red for Remembrance Sunday and to celebrate Diwali.

But lights at the bottom of the tower have been smashed and the lighting-up ceremony was called off as Gravesham council feared it would not be able to get it fixed in time.

But at the eleventh hour, companies have stepped in and the spire will now light up.

Gravesham council posted this evening: "We have a good news update on this post from yesterday, to which we had an incredible reaction.

"Our friends from 8Point3LED and GA Harpers Construction Services have worked wonders today and have managed to fix the lighting at the Clock Tower, which will now be lit up to mark Remembrance weekend.

Cllr Shane Mochrie-Cox said: "Thank you to all who have worked so hard on site today to make this happen. Myself and the whole community are so grateful to you."

The post continued: "We would also like to thank Kent Fire and security, High Resonance and Illumination and Jamie Fuller for their generous and community-spirited offers of help to find a temporary fix ahead of the weekend.#One Community

Chairman of Gravesham, Labour and cabinet member for community and leisure, Cllr Mochrie-Cox, said previously: "We are disappointed that a mindless act means we cannot light the Clock Tower for two such important dates.

"We are doing all we an to identify those responsible and when we do we will seek a prosecution for criminal damage and to cover the cost of repairs. We will not tolerate acts such as this."
