Gravesend’s Borough Market Hall is taking shape and on track to open later this year.

The council says the refurbishment, assisted by £1.8 million from the Coastal Communities Fund, is going well.

Head of business development Cllr Samir Jassal said: “This project is progressing well and it’s exciting to see what impact it’s going to have on our town once it’s open. It’s really pleasing to see so much interest from businesses wanting to sell their products in the new hall.”

With space for up to 21 permanent stalls, 30 temporary stalls, six temporary food catering stalls and a cafe, the council has been working to ensure that they are filled by appropriate businesses.

Open day sessions were held with more than 100 people attending including stall holders, business start-ups and other independent firms.

Cllr Jassal added: “We’re committed to ensuring the refurbished market meets the requirements of Gravesham and the town and we aim to provide the necessary support and guidance where needed.”

Brian Horton, owner of Mowbray’s Fine Chocolates, said: “I thought the business support sessions were very successful and helpful for most people.

“I do look forward to the future with Gravesend, and to me it looks as if a great deal of thought and energy has gone into setting up this market.”

The next steps involve finalising the permanent stall holders, followed by a site visit to the market in September.
