A woman with a passion for art is hoping her project will bring people together.
Wendy Cottam, 43, is a member of the Gravesend Arts Consortium and hopes Footfall will give a platform to creative people in the area.
Mrs Cottam, of Dover Road, Northfleet, an artist and part-time shop assistant, has organised a series of workshops and exhibitions, to be held every Saturday from March 22 to May 31.
All ages are welcome to Footfall, which will take place at Gravesend Borough Market, off the High Street. It costs £30 a week for studio space.
The mother-of-three hopes it will unite people from Gravesham’s diverse cultural community.
She said: “We’ve organised the workshops so all cultures are represented and there is quite an eclectic mix of workshops for people to do.
“People can discuss what art is because there are all sorts of artists taking part; they’ve come from university, they’ve come from conceptual art, there’s a real mix.”
Mrs Cottam, who was inspired to organise Footfall after completing a BA (hons) degree in fine art at UCA Canterbury, said all art was welcome, including installations, performances, photography and sculpture.
Visitors can also play a part.
She said:“We want to give something to the community.
“The aim is to cast all of their feet, people who attended the workshops and the artists, and take them down to the St Andrew’s Arts Centre. It’s a different side of art, it’s not a traditional or conventional side.”
Mrs Cottam thinks people are often too insecure to display their works.
She said:“I think there is a lot of talent in Gravesend.
“A lot of people don’t realise what to do with their art.
“They say ‘I don’t think it’s good enough’ but art isn’t about being good enough, it’s about the idea of art and communicating – whether it’s with painting or colours or sculpture.”
