THE government's get-tough stance on benefits is about to hit Gravesham. with many people losing hundreds of pounds.

Most of Gravesham's 9,000 benefit claimants face 18.5% cuts from next April.

Councils will have to set up their own schemes to support people on low incomes.

A Gravesham council spokesman said their government grant will be 10% less than the current cost of tax benefits.

Pensioners will not be affected.

People will be able to get support for four weeks after returning to work.

Gravesham is consulting on a plan to provide extra allowances to disabled people, those with children and introducing means testing. That means the burden will fall on the unemployed and out-of-work under-65s.

The council is sending out questionnaires and additional information to thousands of families for their views. All 9,000 households currently receiving council tax benefits will be included.
