A church in Southfleet has been given a cash boost by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
A grant of £139,900 has been given to St Nicholas Church which will go towards conservation and heating improvements at the Grade I listed building. Work is due to start in June.
The building dates back to 1325, although extensive work was carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Next month’s project will include repair to the stonework at the east end, re-pointing and gutter repairs.
Conservation will be carried out on two paintings and two boilers will also be installed.
With a warmer building in a better state of repair, it is hoped it will enable the church to serve the community better, holding events such as concerts and school functions.
The work will also improve things for mother and toddler groups, youth activities and clubs and societies including the choir and hand bell ringers.
The church is used by nearby Sedley’s Church of England Primary School.
Church warden Mike Breton said: “The project will engage with people, both the local and wider community, with the heritage of the church and will form part of educational visits and talks to local community groups.
“Our aim is, where possible and appropriate, for people to come to workshops and/or training sessions given by contractors.
“We would also like to extend this to incorporate demonstrations and lectures by the stonemasons to the primary school and other interested parties.
“The governors, staff, pupils and parents are delighted at the award of this National Lottery grant.”
