PRIME Minister Tony Blair descended on Gravesend today to launch the government's plan for sustainable communities in the Thames Gateway.

He and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, travelling on a large pleasure cruiser, docked at the Port of London Authority building on the edge of the River Thames.

A massive £6billion programme to deliver high quality homes, schools, health services, jobs, green spaces and transport links was announced by Mr Prescott in the next phase of the Thames Gateway development programme.

The visit coincided with an announcement by Gravesham Borough Council who today launched its Town Centre Strategy Review which is set to become the keystone for regeneration and development within the town centre.

Mr Prescott said: "We have a unique opportunity now and for future generations. The Thames Gateway strategy we are launching today shows how we are investing £6billion across the Thames Gateway to create sustainable communities, stimulate economic development, deliver sustainable homes, enhance the local environment and restore historic town centres."
