A boy has died and another has been arrested after an incident which sparked a huge emergency response.
Police were called at 5.45pm yesterday to concerns for the welfare of a boy in Singlewell Road, Gravesend.
At the time, three police cars, an ambulance and fire crews were spotted at the junction of Cross Lane West and Cross Lane East. An air ambulance was also seen leaving Woodlands Park nearby.
A boy was subsequently taken to hospital, where he later died. His next of kin are aware.
As part of an investigation to establish the circumstances another boy has been arrested.
Police said both boys are under 12.
This afternoon, part of Cross Lane West remained cordoned off – a small access route which leads through to garages. Police officers are standing at the cordon.
People we spoke to who live nearby said they did not know what had happened. One said she saw some boys playing by the garages but that was all.
Some said police had been at the scene all night, and forensic officers had been spotted earlier today.
It is understood door-to-door inquiries are being carried out.
One nearby resident said: “It is just so sad.”
One resident of Cross Lane West said: "I just heard a helicopter flying around before it landed in the park and a lot of emergency response vehicles driving up and down."
Supt Nick Sparkes said: “Our thoughts are with the family and wider community impacted as a result of last night’s events.
“Police are working with partners to provide support to all the families involved and are not looking to speak to anyone else in connection with this incident.”
