Ebbsfleet are now six points adrift of safety in Blue Square Bet Premier despite holding Cambridge to a draw at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday night.
With fellow strugglers Barrow and Nuneaton winning elsewhere, the Fleet lost ground in the battle for survival. They do, however, still have games in hand over the three sides immediately above them.
Tom Elliott had a header saved by Preston Edwards in the first-half but Matt Godden twice went close for the visitors at the other end.
After the break, Ebbsfleet defender Phil Walsh sent a header just wide. Cambridge responded when Kevin Roberts forced Edwards to save his free-kick and Liam Hughes then shot just past the post.
Godden (pictured) curled a shot against the far post but the Scunthorpe loanee did find the back of the net on 70 minutes following a misjudged tackle by Charlie Wassmer.
That looked to have set up the Fleet’s first win on the road since November but former Bromley midfielder Harrison Dunk slid in to grab a point for Cambridge after Paul Lorraine had blocked John Gorman’s initial effort.
The Fleet travel to Barrow on Saturday. The Bluebirds are one place and four points above Liam Daish’s side, having played a game more.
