Runners and walkers are being sought to help raise money for charity in memory of two Gravesham youngsters.
Last year more than 200 people took part in a 12-mile race and raised more than £25,000 for Leukaemia Research in memory of Ben Johnson, who tragically fell victim to the disease in 2007 when he just was 17.
His father Neil Johnson is arranging a second event which will also be dedicated to pink princess Jamie-Leigh Harrington who sadly lost her two year battle with the rare disease Lymphangiomatosis last September. She was just 11 years old.
Neil, of Cross Lane East, Gravesend, revealed why he is dedicating the day to both youngsters.
He said: “Even though it is Ben’s day we will also have runners for Jamie-Leigh. She did the race last year in her wheelchair and was a very brave little girl.”
A level student Ben was a passionate sportsman as well as a hardworking academic.
The Gravesend Grammar School pupil’s enthusiasm for boxing and keeping fit led to his decision with three of his close friends to run 12 miles from Gravesend to Bluewater and back, as part of an intensive training programme.
On Sunday, May 3, Neil is hoping hundreds will take part in a 12-mile fundraising run at Gravesend Rugby Club, off Rochester Road, to commemorate the Bluewater run and celebrate the lives of Ben and Jamie-Leigh, which were tragically cut short.
He added: “A lot of Ben’s friends are off to university this year so I want to make it a really big one. It is probably the last chance of them all being together.
“I am hoping to get a least 300 people involved and match the £25,000 raised last year.”
Money raised on the day will go to the Ben Johnson Forget Me Not Fund which will help Leukaemia Research in its quest to find a cure for blood cancers.
Neil who is also taking part added: “All runners and walkers will receive a medal even if they don’t finish the race. Even if you didn’t know Ben we would like you to get involved.
“The charity spent millions on research last year. This money will really help them, especially during the difficult recession.”
